Teaching Barrel Racing at MYTRA is a stand alone event. It is not a precursor to any other event. Contestants will move forward into the barrel racing world. Please know that most Rodeos have this event as a female only event, though there are many many barrel shows that allow men to ride as well. So dont be suprised if you call in for a rodeo and barrels are a girls only event.
Teaching Dummy Roping to our younger contestants teaches them the basics of roping off the ground. Kids need to get those basics before throwing a loop off a horse. MYTRA has dummy roping for our members up to age 8 to hone those basic skills. From there the kids can move on to breakaway roping, team roping, or even calf tied down roping. Learning these basics will help them move forward in the roping events and working on the farm or ranch.
Pole Bending is not a typical Rodeo Event, but more of a Horse Show event. However High School Rodeo does have this event in their line up and we are preparing those kids to move up to that HS Rodeo Level. Poles teaches members horsemanship and control. You will not likely find this event when calling into a Rodeo.
Mutton Busting is a precursor to Bull Riding. This event allows the younger kids to become familiar with the chutes and backpens and allows them to be a part of the tradition of rodeo. You will see many Rodeos that use mutton busting as "Entertainment" or a spectator event. This isnt the case with MYTRA, we use this as a tool to prepare our very young to get used to the workings of their future Bull Rides.
Bull Riding is a stand alone event. You will find Bull Riding at almost every Rodeo. We pride ourselves in working with our stock contractors and volunteers to make sure that our members receive a fair pen of stock to ride. Our younger contestants have stock hand picked for their ability to ensure safety, and our older members are drawn from an even pen. We will never overmount a contestant in our teachings.
Goat Tying is both a stand alone event and the perfect teaching tool for our younger members wanting to move up to Calf Tie Down Roping in the future. When you call into a rodeo, Goat Tying will be a girls event, but it helps our boys with the basics to move forward to tie down. Just like Dummy Roping moves our kids to other roping events this event will teach them the basics of tying. After the kids in our association reach the Senior class (13-17) our goat tying goes to an all girls event and boys move onto post tying and Tie Down Roping.
Calf Tie Down Roping is a boys event in Rodeo. When our members become Seniors they will move away from Goat tying and Breakaway Roping and go forward onto this event. Calf Tying is done off a horse but we have many kids that are not capable of or have a horse capable of this event, so we offer Post Tying along with this event ( You will Post Tie or Tie Down, not both) If your child wants to tie off a horse the child and the horse will have to be vetted prior to doing so and approved to rope from horseback. If not approved the contestant may post tie in its place.
Breakaway Roping is a girls event in Rodeo. Your contestant may move up from dummy roping to breakaway boy or girl until age 12. After this Breakaway becomes and all girl event for the 13-17 year olds and the boys will then move onto Post tying or Tie Down Roping. Breakaway is a great transition from dummy roping for all contestants to learn the box, barrier and tracking with their horse.
This is probably a new event to everyone. Calf undecorating is becoming quite the event in Girls Rodeo. But it has its advantages for both boys and girls. Calf undecorating is a precursor to Tie Down Roping for Boys as well. So this event is open to both boys and girls ages 13-17. The contestant will work with an adult hazer, they release the steer from the chute and track the steer as they would with tie down roping but remove a ribbon off the steers back instead of actually jumping from the horse and flipping the steer. This event will give the girls the opportunity to learn the event and the boys the opportunity to get more of the basics for tie down roping.
Team Roping is an all seniors event. Team roping is available to 13-17 year olds to participate. Team roping is a very popular rodeo event throughout the rodeo world. Our contestants can choose to head or heal. If they choose to heal the steer will be tied to an adult header to begin. The child will have only 2 runs they will head once with a partner and heal once with a partner if they choose to do both.
